TRIP, which stands for Technique, Rehearse, Implement and Perform, is a competitive dance company associated with the Stowe & Mad River Dance Academy. It is comprised of 35 dancers ages 9-18 from the towns of Stowe, Waterbury, Morrisville, Johnson, Hyde Park, Albany and Waitsfield. TRIP offers young dancers in Vermont the opportunity to master technique and performance skills in the areas of Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, and Hip Hop.
In its 17th year, TRIP participated in leading industry competitions throughout the Northeast. This year TRIP traveled to Boston for the NUVO Competition and Worcester for Artists Simply Human (ASH). TRIP also competed for the first time at the JUMP Convention in Albany. During these competitions, dancers attended highly challenging classes taught by industry professionals. TRIP dancers competed their repertoire against other teams in the region, coming away with numerous awards and recognitions, most notably the Well-Rounded Studio Award at NUVO Boston.
“I have really enjoyed seeing the transformation and growth of our company dancers over the many years,” says TRIP artistic director Helena Sullivan. “I’ve said this before, but the enthusiasm and excitement within the company grows constantly. Our dancers support and work hard together as a team.”
The senior TRIP dancers have performed twice on stage with Grace Potter at the Grand Point North Music Festival in Burlington, as well in as local Stowe & Waitsfield events. Many of the TRIP dancers spend their summers attending highly selective dance intensives at world-renowned ballet schools such as the School of American Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet Academy, Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet School, and Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet.
“TRIP was, and still is a new opportunity for us to experience the vast dance world outside of Vermont,” says Maria Sullivan, manager and teacher at Stowe & Mad River Dance Academy, as well as a choreographer for TRIP. “Things have really evolved within the company and the competition/convention scene overall. Our students have grown so much with this extra exposure. TRIP gives them that opportunity.”
