Backstage Pass – Susan Calza

Susan Calza is one of the artists featured in our online gallery exhibition, Art of Sound. She is owner and curator of The Susan Calza Gallery in Montpelier, Vermont. Her gallery has been closed since the pandemic precautions began in March, 2020 and she is slowly reopening with work created in her studio in times of quarantine.

Feeling the need to engage with the Montpelier community, she curated a two-day exhibition which will be on the lawn outside of the gallery. The exhibition we are pissed, we are broken hearted and we remain engaged”  features the work of three artists whose ages span from 16 to 60’s: Susan Calza (sculpture), Izzy Giammusso (mixed media on paper), Bailey Rinaldi (etchings) and Rob Rinaldi (mixed media works on paper). This collection of multi-media work is a direct response to the current social and political climate amidst the turbulence of global pandemic. The collection reacts to thoughts of holding up a mirror and speaking truth to power.

Calza’s postcard “told ya”

Also on view at the outdoor gallery site will be a fundraiser for the Vermont Food Bank. A collection of postcards addressing the same themes – reflections on social or personal issues related to Covid-19 and these wild and turbulent times. In an effort to give back to the community in this time of need, donations for the postcards are encouraged, and all monies from the sales of cards will go directly to the Vermont Food Bank. The postcard collections are a combination of original works, and printed photographic work by a large group of local artists and some further afield.

Receptions take place on the lawn of The Susan Calza Gallery at 138 Main Street, which offers opportunity to view the work and continue the conversation, while remaining safely social distanced. on August 7th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Montpelier ArtWalk, and on August 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during Capital City Farmers’ Market hours.
