Violin virtuosos Sons of Mystro take the Spruce Peak Arts stage this Thursday, February 15th. Before they dazzle you with their unique blend of classical, pop, and hip-hop, get to know the brothers Malcolm and Umoja McNeish from Miami!
Sons of Mystro is the musical duo of brothers Malcolm and Umoja McNeish. They both began playing the violin at a young age, and they were greatly influenced by the groundbreaking hip-hop/classical duo group Black Violin during their elementary school days. After seeing Black Violin perform live, Umoja received advice from Kevin Marcus (of Black Violin) to “practice, practice, practice.” This advice fueled Umoja’s dedication to improving his technique and styling, subsequently impacting his brother.
Sons of Mystro have grown their audience around the city of Miami. They have performed as the half-time entertainment for numerous Miami Heat games, and they made musical contributions to the reality show “Kourtney and Kim Take Miami”. In 2016, Sons of Mystro received recognition as Emerging Artists under 21 at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. Their cover performances are marked by a unique styling that enhances the original songs, and they are actively working on their debut album featuring original compositions. Younger brother Umoja tends to serve as the “hype man” for the duo, while older brother Malcolm tends to take the more challenging riffs as the “focused Mystro”. The duo always plays with DJ Venimis, another Miami native.
Sons of Mystro list their numerous inspirations as Samvel Yervinyan, Sayaka Katsuki, and the late Jascha Heifetz. Through the course of their career, they have had the opportunity to perform with Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Dobby Dobson, Freddie McGregor, Frankie Paul, and Barrington Levy. Additionally, they have collaborated with contemporary musicians including Mr. Vegas, Beenie Man, Romain Virgo, and Etana.
