Backstage Pass – John Bauer

How Can We Judge?

We have no way of knowing what it’s like
to walk in the shadows
to carry the burden
we who live with privilege by the accident of birth.

We have no way of knowing what it’s like
to wait for hundreds of years
to cry the countless tears
we who counsel patience and terrorize the earth.

We have no way of knowing what it’s like
to build America
and be denied the dream
we who are confused and wonder why the violence.

We have no way of knowing what it’s like
the incessant humiliation
to suffer gratuitous danger
we who walk wherever we please.

We have no way of knowing the violence of despair
the daily insult
the invisible whip
of life under the cloud of oppression.

We have no way of knowing what it’s like
but that doesn’t excuse our silence.
