Edgar Meyer, Mike Marshall & George Meyer Bluegrass Trio
American music masters Edgar Meyer(bass) and Mike Marshall(mandolin) join together with George Meyer(violin) for a special collaboration usually only heard on the summer bluegrass festival circuit! Expect to hear works from the genre bending Short Trip Home album of many years ago as well as new music written specifically for this tour. Edgar’s son George is charting his own course in the musical world and represents the next generation of artists expressing their unique voices and perspective. He certainly has strong roots!
George Meyer
George Meyer is equally interested in “classical” music, in fiddle music, and in what theyhave in common; these interestsinformhis composing. His pieces for classical string-playing friends make use of lessons learned from the fiddle side, and vice versa.He has been commissioned by Chamber Music Northwest, Bravo! Vail, Astral Artists andKatie Hyun, Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg, the Versoi Ensemble, Midsummer’sMusic, and the Tribeca New Music Festival. He has performed his own compositions at the92nd Street Y, Stanford Live in Bing Concert Hall, the Phillips Center at University of Florida,the Newman Center at University of Denver, the Gogue Center at Auburn University, IngramHall at Vanderbilt University, the Peace Center in Greenville, SC, and Troy Savings BankMusic Hall in Troy, NY, among many others. Festival appearances performing his owncompositions include the Aspen Music Festival, Bravo! Vail, Chamber Music Northwest,the Rome Chamber Music Festival, and the Telluride and RockyGrass Bluegrass Festivals.He recently announced a new violin-piano duo project, Upstream, with composer-pianistWill Healy; they co-compose their repertoire.
Mike Marshall
Three-time Grammy Nominee Mike Marshall is one of most accomplished mandolinists performing and recording today and has released over 40CDsintheBluegrass,Jazz, Classical and Brazilian music styles. He is also a master of the mandocello, guitar and violin, seamlessly integrating jazz, Classical and Brazilian musical styles into his American string band background. Marshall was raised on traditional music intheAmericanSoutheastbutattheageof19was invited to join the David Grisman Quintet and tour and record with jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli, guitarist Tony Rice, and violinists Darol Anger and Mark O’Connor. Mike went on to create some of the most adventurous New Acoustic musicin America with his ensembles The Montreux Band, Psychograss, New Grange, The Big Trio, The Modern Mandolin Quarteton the Rounder, Sugar Hill and Windham Hill labels from 1985–1999.Along with Bassist Edgar Meyer, Mike recorded two CDs for the Sony Classical label(1997-99) with violinist Joshua Bell, mandolinist Sam Bush and banjo master Bela Fleck and performed at the 1999Grammy award ceremonies. He and fellow Mandolinist Chris Thile set new standards of mandolin playing on their two duet CDs for the Sugar Hill record label(2003-4). Mike has also spearheaded an international revival in Brazilian Choro music through recordings with his group Choro Famoso, mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda and pianist Jovino Santos Neto on his own Adventure Music label as well as through his book and educational publications. Mike’s wife is classical mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg, and they have released four CDs together. The two tour regularly in the US and Europe and in 2025debuted a new work commissioned for them by composer Evan Price with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. They have performed at the MET, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Savannah Music Festival and countless venues throughout Germany where they live part time. As an educator Marshall teaches hundreds of mandolinists online at his SchoolofMandolinatArtistWorks.com. He and Caterina created a traveling mandolin seminar called The Mandolin World Retreats which has taken place in Napa, California and Sicily and Umbria, Italy. Mike’s most recent recordings(and proudest accomplishments to date) are his adaptations of the Six J.S. Bach Solo Cello Suites performed on his Monteleone Mandocello, (available as downloads on his Band camp page). Soon to follow will be a duet CD with Brazilian guitarist Alessandro Penezzi.

Hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument, ”Edgar Meyer is the only bassist to be awarded both the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize and MacArthur Grant, solidifying his unparalleled talent in his field. In 2024, he was honored with his sixth and seventh GRAMMY® Awards for As We Speak, the second acclaimed studio album released with long-time friend and collaborators, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Rakesh Chaurasia. 2024 also saw the release of But Who’s Gonna Play the Melody?, a duo album featuring fellow bassist Christian McBride, as well as a complete recording of Meyer’s three concertos for bass and orchestra with The Knights, conducted by Eric Jacobsen and produced by Chris Thile. The concerto project includes his Concertino for Bass and 14 Strings, recorded in 2023 with the Scottish Ensemble led by Jonathan Morton, who commissioned and toured the piece with Meyer in 2022.In addition to his performing and recording career, Meyer is a celebrated composer. Most recently, he was one of five composers commissioned by American violinist Joshua Bell and the New York Philharmonic for his project The Elements, which had its world premiere in 2023.This season, Meyer will tour the US with violinist Tessa Lark and cellist Joshua Roman. The newly formed trio will perform newly commissioned work alongside his string trios composed in 1980. Mr. Meyer is the subject of an ongoing documentary filmed and produced by Tessa Lark, Andrew Adair, and Michael Thurber.
